Cost and profit margin calculator

Enter your cost, overhead and the profit you want, and see the lowest price you should sell at. Or find out how much profit is left at today’s price. For food, you can also find the cost of one portion.

Everything this tool does happens in your browser. The names, phone numbers and amounts you type are not sent to our servers and are gone when you close the page.

How to use it

  1. On “Find the selling price” enter cost, overhead, commission and target profit.
  2. On “What is my margin?” see what is left at the price you charge today.
  3. On “Portion cost” add the ingredients; the cost per portion includes waste.

Good to know

  • Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is the rate added on top of cost. They are not the same; the tool shows both.
  • Enter the cost without VAT. You set the VAT rate that fits your product.
  • Results are a helper calculation and not tax or financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin divides profit by the selling price, markup divides it by cost. A 30% margin means a price of about 1.43 times cost; a 30% markup means 1.30 times.

How do I find the overhead per unit?

Divide monthly fixed costs such as rent, electricity and staff by the number of items you sell a month.

What is waste?

The share of ingredients lost to cooking, trimming or spillage; it is added to the cost.

Is what I calculate stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and not sent anywhere.
